Andy Vernon (Creative Director)
Andy studied horticulture at Nottingham University and also read Agriculture, Botany and European Studies at the University of Gottingen in Germany to give him a
joint honours degree in Horticulture with European Studies.
He then added hands-on practical experience by joining the Royal Horticultural Society and trained as a horticultural apprentice on the Wisley Diploma for a year before his first role and ‘proper job’ as a botanical horticulturist with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London. At Kew, Andy gained experience firstly in the herbaceous department working in the woodland garden and alpine section, and then later joining the glasshouse department to work in the famous Palm House and Waterlily House. During his time at Kew, Andy took a sabbatical to work at a newly established Botanic Park in the Cayman Islands, and went to botanise and visit gardens across Cuba for 2 weeks, followed by a month studying tropical botany at the University of Miami.
Andy left Kew to join 'The Palm Centre' in Surrey as the Retail and Displays Manager and got a taste for display horticulture at RHS shows. However, after just a year he was offered an opportunity he couldn't ignore. A six month professional internship in Public Garden Management at the National Tropical Botanical Garden of the USA followed, based on Kauai, the oldest of the Hawaiian islands.
On returning to the U.K., Andy began a period of self-employed gardening and landscaping work in London. He also began working in the TV industry as a freelance specialist researcher on gardening programmes for Channel 4 and the BBC.
Andy joined the BBC permanently to become an assistant producer and director and later a series producer/director across many of the BBC's biggest gardening brands: Gardeners' World, The RHS Chelsea Flower Show Coverage, BBC Gardener of the Year, Bees Butterflies & Blooms etc.
In 2012 Andy established Planet Dahlia Ltd to bring together his experience and passion for horticulture and all areas of the gardening media.
